Calgary, AB – The serene setting of a recent Dads and Sons camping trip, organized by the Anatolian Turkish Islamic Centre(ATIC) of Calgary on the weekend of April 11th-13th, provided an engaging backdrop for an important discussion on crime prevention. The Islamic Restoration Society – IRES, a dedicated non-profit organization committed to supporting Muslim individuals within the correctional system and preventing future involvement, was invited to speak to attendees about “Steering Clear of Pitfalls” Chaplain Malik Muradov who is Chaplain at federal institutions, addressed the gathering, sharing valuable insights and guidance on making positive choices and avoiding the pitfalls that can lead to incarceration. Drawing upon firsthand experience within the prison system, the presentation offered a powerful and relatable perspective on the consequences of crime and the importance of proactive measures.
The session aimed to empower young men and their fathers with knowledge and strategies for navigating life’s challenges in a way that promotes well-being and avoids legal entanglements. Discussions likely touched upon topics such as:
* The importance of strong family bonds and positive role models: Highlighting the crucial influence of fathers and mentors in guiding young individuals. * Choosing your friend: Emphasizing critical thinking skills and understanding the potential ramifications of actions, especially when it comes to choosing your friends. * The significance of education and community involvement: Showcasing positive avenues for personal growth and belonging. * Understanding legal boundaries and respecting the law: Providing clarity on expectations and consequences. * Seeking support and guidance: Encouraging open communication and the utilization of available resources.

The camping event offered a unique and informal environment for these crucial conversations to take place, fostering open dialogue between fathers and sons.
“It’s vital to reach young people early and provide them with the tools and understanding they need to make positive choices,” said Chaplain Malik Muradov. “Prevention is just as important as the support we offer to those already within the system. This camping trip provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with families and share a message of hope and empowerment.”
IRES continues its vital work in supporting Muslim individuals in federal institutions and remains dedicated to its mission of preventing future involvement in the justice system.
