Black History Month Event at Bowden Institution
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,
As part of Black History Month, members of the IRES community participated in a meaningful outreach initiative at Bowden Institution titled “Building Positive Black Identity.” A total of 14 community members attended, including 4 representatives from IRES.
This inaugural event created a constructive space for dialogue between community members and incarcerated individuals. Participants engaged in thoughtful discussions, exchanged ideas, and shared poetry focused on identity, dignity, faith, and personal growth. The atmosphere was respectful, reflective, and forward-looking.

Imam Bashir Hareed of Red Deer delivered a substantive presentation highlighting the Islamic framework for addressing racism. He emphasized that Islam historically confronted racial injustice and elevated Black Muslims from positions of enslavement to positions of leadership, scholarship, and moral authority. His remarks underscored the Qur’anic principle of human equality and the prophetic model of social justice.
The program welcomed 66 inmates, 14 community guests, 4 speakers, and 2 chaplains. Turks Breakfast House generously sponsored cake for all attendees, contributing to the sense of hospitality and shared community.
IRES remains committed to initiatives that promote dignity, dialogue, rehabilitation, and positive identity development. Events such as this reflect the importance of community engagement in fostering mutual understanding and constructive change.
